How E-Scout works

E-Scout compares what it can see on your map with a written scouting methodology, then ranks places that match it for the season you choose.

Where pin coordinates come from

  • Georeferenced

GeoTIFF, GeoJSON, KML and KMZ files carry coordinates. Pins are placed from that data.

  • Needs calibration

A plain map image. You mark at least three points whose latitude and longitude you know, and E-Scout reports how accurate the fit is before placing pins.

  • Not located

Without coordinates or calibration, E-Scout can describe areas on the image but will not create map pins or exports.

What the score means

Each candidate gets a methodology score from 0 to 100. It measures how many of the scouting rules for your season the evidence supports, and how strongly. It is not the chance that elk are there, and it has not been tested against real elk locations.

Limitations

  • Map imagery can be years old. Burns, beetle kill, water and trails may have changed.
  • Slope and aspect are only measured when elevation data is available; otherwise they are estimates from the image.
  • Water seen on a map is not proof that it is flowing now.
  • Hunting seasons, units and land access differ by state and year. Check your state's regulations.
  • AI interpretation can be wrong. Every candidate shows which parts are observed and which are inferred.
